Below is a Catalog of my Work
in Graduate School
from Aug 2011 until RIGHT NOW
Year 2 of 3 has Officially Wrapped Up!
Been super busy these passed couple of weeks.
<<<
Look to your left and check out my new Layout Section.
Here are my two final rough tests of the semester.
I had to do a Goofy run cycle, which we were given the keys to start with.
The other had to be Goofy lifting and struggling with a suitcase and when he unpacks it,
some sort of surprise needed to happen.
I went with Rats. Had a good time with it.

Dialogue Tester
5.2.12
This is the finished Hunstman Dialogue.
Had fun playing around with animating in photoshop and dabbling in some sound effects.
Pretty satifisfied with the outcome of this and looking forward to more dialogue driven animations.
First Draft of Antique Surf Repair Shop/Garage
4.29.12
Last week I was given an assignment to create an Antique repair shop/garage.
I went with an antique surf repair shop, which ended up being less antiquey and more island/beach style.
For the next draft I'll be moving around bits and pieces and adding more surfboard repair elements so that the concept is more clear.
The Hotrod is too much of the focus at this point.
Forgot to mention that my instructor told me to scrap this and basically start over.
I had a good hard laugh, in my head.

Some Animation Testin' and Second'ish Draft of Saloon
4.24.12
I'm working on a dialogue between the Huntsman and the Rat and trying to practice a bit with digital animation.
Here is some of the preliminary stuff.

This is the second draft of the saloon.
I changed a few things around, cleaned up some lines, and added the cigarette machine in the foreground.
I feel like most of these Layout drawings could be good starting points for some cool pieces.

Recapping the Past Few Weeks
4.14.12
(VINTAGE iPHONE TRICKERY)
*SPRING BREAK*
Saw a great amount of Highway 1.

*SPRING BREAK*
Hung out with my dog and my lady on the beach.

*SPRING BREAK*
1,435 mi Road trip from SF to San Diego and LA.
Got to see some good friends along the way.

I was given a sweet skatedeck to paint.
Updates on this will be in the near future.

Built this badboy to help me get more stuff done at the house.

These guys got finished about a month ago but I figured I'd throw em up. Created them with sculpey.
Need better quality pics of them.

My first draft of a saloon.
I wanted to add a little personal touch to this with the rat characters
but my instructor wants me to focus more on the environment.
I agree.
Characters later.

My final pen-on-tracing-paper drawing for my animator's room.
HAPPY to be moving onto the next assignment.

Animator's Studio #2
3.27.12
My second go at my artist's room.
I think this version is cool because it seems more true to life.
I see myself getting stuck in a cubicle at some point.
My instructor preferred my first version more for spacial reasons.
So I'll be fixing that one up tomorrow.
I'll come back to this one and draw in a fat greasy hairy guy sitting in that chair later.

Roger Rabbit Cleaned Up
3.23.12
I spent about 4 hours cleaning up 6 breakdown drawings.
Between the ears, whiskers and the little bunches of hair,
I had a grand old time.
Below is shot on two's for your viewing ease, but the one below that is shot on the intended one's.
FOLLOW THE NOSE.
Shot on Two's for your viewing ease

Shot on One's which is the proper shooting speed.
It's pretty incredible to imagine the amount of drawings
in feature length animated movies shot on one's.

Animator's Studio #1
3.19.12
Here is my current project from Layout Design.
Another tedious project with lots of layers of tracing paper.
Prepare yourself for one more version of the artist's room
and then a finalized version of the best of the two.

A Few Weeks Worth of Animation Assignments
At this point, halfway through the semester,
I would have to say that this was my favorite animation assignment.
We were given the key drawings to one of my favorite movie characters of all time, Roger Rabbit,
and we had to draw the breakdowns.
This is officially my third breakdown assignment and I can confidently say that I'm getting better.

Quadruped Walk Cycles
Profile walk cycle of rat and human.

3/4 View of my robot rat frame. No head.

Profile of a super crappy rat.
I am not happy with this at all
but I thought I'd throw it up here
to remind myself not to suck so bad.

This is my jump-roping Huntsman that I was forced to come back and fix.
The rope swing is still not perfect and the feet are as good as they are gonna get.

Busy Not Posting,
But I Passed My Midpoint,
Which Is GREAT!
3.10.12
Here are a few additional characters that will appear in Meat Pops:

Fish Market Cable Car
2.28.12
This is my final sketch for the cable car.
Tomorrow is going to be dedicated to re drawing this with a background.

Initial Ideas on Stacks of Tracing Paper

Ready for a Grueling Week
2.20.12
I went on an intense backpacking excursion this weekend
and barely made it to class today due to jello legs.
Tomorrow begins a big project for my layout class.
Stay tuned for my Fish Market-Cable Car-Stand.

Some Tests
2.14.12
Inbetweening the key frames from The Great Mouse Detective.
This was the second time I've inbetweened for someone else's key frames
and it's a HUGE improvement from my last attempt.

I restarted this guy so I could rework the physics and rhythm
of the jump rope and the character's body.
Next week: Fix the feet and the rope.

Simple shaped character jump roping with a cape (minus the cape).
It's jerky and off balance but I had fun doing it.

Double Dippin'
2.8.12
After a brain melting week in and outside of classes,
I decided to mess around with some of my charcoal quick studies from 2010.
Pretty therapeutic going back to old drawings.

Background Possibilly's
2.5.12
I'm leaning towards a hand drawn and photo collage format for the background images in Meat Pops.
This pic is something I put together to see how the elements look together.
With some polish I think this direction could turn out pretty cool.

Spring Semester 2012----First Week Down
2.2.12
The first week of the semester is officially over and my plate is already full.
So far I've only sat through lectures but today I got stacked with projects.
This weekend is going to be brutal.
I sketched this in class, stressing about the workload.
Looking forward to seeing what happens this semester.

Another Cityscape
1.24.12
A while back I created the first piece in the 3030 series, roughly inspired by the album Deltron 3030.
I started this alternative piece in the series and never got back to it until yesterday.
I spent way more time than I would care to admit, but I'm glad I finally finished it.

NO MORE BINS!
1.24.12
I added a couple more bin designs to the bunch.
Done and done.

Put Some Type on It
1.19.12
I returned to this piece and added some old school type.

Recycle Again
1.12.12
This Ape-esque creation is me trying to better my chances in that competition that I mentioned.
Applicants can submit as many ideas as they want until the end of the month.
I'll probably squeeze a couple more out by then.

Recycle
1.10.12
So today I wasn't very productive.
I basically sat around and ate tacos all day.
The only thing I managed to accomplish, besides drowning my stomach in tortillas and sriracha,
was creating this masterpiece for a competition for creating custom recycle bins.
Tomorrow will be a day of drawing... with less tacos.

Flying Warrior!
1.9.12
I had to come back to this guy and do what I originally intended,
which was to animate bits and pieces of him.
Deciding to continue this and add color is still up in the air.

Pin Up for brunch
1.6.12
I woke up this morning and decided I'd better draw a pin up gal.
She's helping to provide some balance with the monger below.
I'll come back to this at some point and add some old school type.

First post of 2012!
1.5.12
This illustration might be a metaphor for things to come in 2012.
Anywho, I started this warrior with intent to make a badass gif.
I got a little sidetracked but am hoping i can muster up the goods to animate it.

Floppy FRO
12.29.11
I wanted to add some extra movement to this guy, so I slapped an afro on him.
The slower timing on this run is more dreamlike.
Like he is running towards his long lost dog. I like that.
Moving on.

Playing with timing and what not
12.23.11
It took a couple of days of coming back to this thing
to realize how to make it not look weird running.

Floppy Nose
12.21.11
I'm trying to animate something running
so I figured that I would start with the nose.

SWEAT
12.20.11
I don't have any class assignments for a month!
Time to start messin' around.
I'm hoping over the break to get a bunch of practice animations done.
I'll go ahead and wish myself luck.
Good Luck, Asshole.

Final Assignments for Character Design

Character Sheet for The Hunstman
Here are some poses from the key shots from my storyboards for Meat Pops.

Character Lineup w/ mockup villain
Our assignment was to create a character, a sidekick and a villain.
I decided to go with character's 1 and 2 from Meat Pops.
I created a villain to go along with them as a possible side story.

THESIS: Additional Characters
12.3.11
These are a few of the extra characters that will show up in the story of the Meat Popsicle vendors.

Final Project for Traditional ANM 2- Collab and Lip Sync
12.3.11
For our final in Traditional Animation 2, we were paired with a partner
and instructed to create two characters, have them throw and object, catch the object, and have a short dialogue for lip sync.
Every group drew from a hat and were randomly given the object that our characters would throw and catch.
The object that my partner and I recieved was a severed head, so we decided to go with a pair of gravediggers for our characters.
Right now we are still in the keying and rough animation stages. I'll be updating the blog with this project over the next couple of weeks.

THESIS: Meat Pop Carts
12.3.11
Here are few ideas for the meat pop cart.
The inspiration for the carts basically came from the ice cream men that push these things around San Francisco.
I'm leaning towards the tiki-style umbrella on the cart but am not yet certain whether or not it will be included throughout the story.

THESIS: Some Rats
11.17.11
I'm trying to figure out how I want this rat to look.
I'm sort of into the first guy with the googly eyes
but am leaning towards keeping the rat looking more true to real animal form but at the same time anthropomorphic.
The beady black eyed characters capture that the best I think.

THESIS: Huntsman Clothing Possibilities
11.16.11
I'm exploring some costume changes to my main character
and continuing to change the body model as well.

THESIS: Hunstman Head Turn
11.14.11
This passed week I had to create a character and show two expressions.
I also had to end the clip by making the character look off screen.
I decided to go with the Huntsman character that I have been working with lately.
I was trying to make this guy really expressive with his movements
and he just came out super feminine. Whoops.
120 frames.

Cat Burglar Character Designs
11.9.11
I worked on these over the last couple of weeks for my buddy James,
who's thesis is focusing on a clumsy cat burglar. These were the initial sketches I came up with.

After James decided on the direction of the character, we started tinkering with the height and a little thigh girth variation.

I made the backpack slightly bigger for the turn around.

THESIS: Character Exploration
11.1.11
Over the passed week or so I've been diving into getting this Thesis character of mine locked down,
in the midst of story-boarding my face off.
So far, he is a man, who has a rat for a sidekick, is a hunter/meat-popsicle vendor, and has an animal skin head dress.
This character will most likely also have an Italian accent, thanks to Ryan Gillis.

120 Frame Assignment
10.24.11
This is the follow up to the Push Push Pull keyframes. I feel like the timing of the animation is a bit fast,
but I was restricted to 120 frames and wanted to fit all of my animation into it.
TinWoodsman
10.18.11
The midterm for my character design class was to create a study based on another artists work.
I chose the Marvel artist Skottie Young and used his design of the Tin woodsman from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Push Push Pull keyframes
10.17.11
This is our first two week assignment of the semester.
Last week we had to create a character who would be pushing and pulling a large weight and draw our key frames for it.
I'm happy with the way this is going so far because I only made 17 keys and the whole scene is pretty readable,
even though I haven't drawn in the box rope yet.
This is probably the most success I've had with Keying yet. Next week's goal: finish.
THESIS Concepts
10.11.11
So for the next year and a half or so, I'll be working on my thesis animation, which has to be a fully rendered, 2-3 minute animation.
Here are some pics I was photochoppin for inspiration.

Walk to Run
10.11.11
I created this robotic/stiff walk to run cycle a few days ago.
Our assignment was to use the Guy Genericson model again and provide a believable walk cycle that transitions into a run.
Quadruped Walk Cycles
10.11.11
My first attempts at animating a quadruped. Inspired by my dog Pootie. The cleaner version was just a test I did to see how a hairy version might look.
Flea Market G.I. Joe
10.6.11
Found this gem at the Sunday Flea Market in SF. I bought two Zangiefs.
First assignment for Traditional 2
10.6.11
For this project, we were given a character model called "Guy Genericson", who is appearing is other assignments as well, and we had to animate him jumping over this gap. My character design is not quite what he is supposed to look like and I attempted to stand out by making him run and jump, which ended up in me showing that I don't know how to time a landing.
History Class. Summer 2011
10.6.11
I'm deciding not to post everything that I worked on this passed year but am going to toss in some things here and there as they turn up. Here, I created a series from some really cool photos of the old timey US of A.

Compilation of work from Traditional Animation 1
10.5.11
For my first OFFICIAL post, here is a compilation of the 2D work that I completed from Fall 2010. I thought it would be a healthy start to post my animations from my first year.
A quick recap: I'm studying 2D animation at AAU in San Francisco.
This is my second year of the targeted three.
I started with the intention to complete my Master's in 3D Animation
but changed to 2D Animation at the start of this year's term.
At this point I've only been learning the basic principles of animation.
For the next year or so, most of my work posted on here will be the continued study of character animation
and the eventual grueling process of putting together a 2-3 minute, fully rendered animation, for my thesis.
What I thought was going to be easy has turned out to be pretty hard.
I thought I was going to make animation my bitch, but so far, I am it's bitch.
I've gained great respect for animation and the people who can make it look cool, from the master's to the students.

Jesse Dean Animation Reel 2011 from Jesse Dean on Vimeo.
